YAV : Young Adult Volunteer. That’s me! Well, for this year anyway.
The YAV program is a one year service opportunity for young adults seeking to engage in a cross-cultural experience while seeking God’s will in their lives. Most of us are college grads, and a few of us are still students exploring what to do with this one crazy life we’re given. We live in intentional Christian community, exploring and deepening our faith while serving alongside partners in sites across the United States and around the world. Our site placements range from working with kids (like mine) to working with food justice, for civil rights, and with homeless populations.
We face cultural and language barriers, we intentionally place ourselves in uncomfortable situations, we have no idea what we’re doing most of the time, we have families miles and oceans away, and we thirst to participate in the fight for social justice while finding out more about our God and ourselves.
So as you read this right now, there’s about 50 other YAV’s serving in places like Ireland, Peru, and Hollywood, USA. Go read their blogs too!
Core ideas of the program include:
- Intentional Christian Community,
- Simple Living
- Cross-cultural mission
- Leadership development through faith in action
- Vocational Discernment
